Mandated Fate blends Orwell's "1984" with film noir and cyberpunk, then packs the whole thing into a crime adventure. Thibaut Billerot's game isn't quite ready for release yet, but a free demo is coming in early May.
It's not often that developers and publishers find a marketing tool that helps them and players at the same time. But that's exactly what the return of the playable demo has become: free demos give games an extra burst of attention, while potential buyers don't have to take a blind punt on something they might hate. Win-win.
Tetrarchy Studios is using that tool for Mandated Fate too—and very soon, by the sound of it. The publisher didn't give a specific date in its announcement, but the demo is supposed to land on Steam in "early May."
There was no mention of the DRM-free alternative GOG, and the announcement also stayed quiet on what the demo will actually include or how much of the game it will cover.
All right, but what will the demo actually be showing us? We can at least say this much: Mandated Fate takes place in an alternate, highly technologized version of 1985. Here, a technocratic government enforces surveillance and absolute unity, which obviously calls to mind Orwell's bleak sci-fi brick "1984."
According to the description, this controlled society runs on gravity manipulation. What exactly that's supposed to look like remains unclear for now. The preview trailer further down doesn't shed much light on it either, since every human character keeps both feet firmly on the ground (and the passing train stays right on its tracks).
Your role in all this is that of an Imperial Inspector—a classic Victorian-style detective with a hat and trench coat—investigating a mysterious murder in a rebellious district. You can play from either a third-person or first-person perspective. During your investigation, you'll "naturally" uncover all kinds of secrets and political loyalty conflicts, leaving you to decide whether you want to support the regime or sabotage it from the inside.
Broadly speaking, then, the game promises layered detective work, political intrigue, and choice-driven dialogue. The investigation itself sounds pretty classic at its core: you interrogate suspicious characters, search urban environments, collect clues, and manipulate the game's factions, which go by the wonderfully unsubtle names Dissidents and Loyalists.
So far, it looks like the promised "deep dialogue system" isn't just marketing fluff. The trailer already features a whole lot of talking, but the "vertical, dense city" is also meant to offer seamless exploration, which I'm especially happy about. The setting's look has me pretty curious.
We all know the feeling: we’re not needed on the job, our better half is off with their affair, and our friends have ditched us because they've found cooler people. So we sit at the computer, bored out of our skulls, reading Mainstream Outside and absent-mindedly poking at our feet.
Then, suddenly, this weird online magazine says Tetrarchy Studios is looking for playtesters for Mandated Fate. Could this be your reason to get out of bed tomorrow? Let's see:
Playtesters Wanted - Help Shape the Investigation
Ahead of its public demo, Mandated Fate is actively seeking players to help refine the experience.
The team is specifically looking for:
- Steam Deck testers to evaluate performance and handheld playability
- Controller users to refine input feel and accessibility
- Narrative-driven RPG fans ready to stress test choices, dialogue, and outcomes
Player feedback will directly influence polish, balance, and overall immersion as the game moves toward release.
Should that sound like your new calling, take a look at the website for Mandated Fate. Farther down on the landing page, you'll find a link to the official Discord server, where mods or team members can give you more information.
For now, Mandated Fate is only coming to PC. There's no exact release date yet, though judging by the tone of the press email, one might be announced fairly soon.
