Developer-publisher Super AC has announced Lancelot: The Silver Knight, a new... well, what exactly? At first glance, it looks like a humorous top-down hack-and-slash. According to the team, though, it’s actually an action adventure in the vein of classic The Legend of Zelda games.
When the announcement for Lancelot: The Silver Knight landed in my inbox today, the screenshots immediately caught my eye. Why? Well, because this new Zelda-like looks less like Zelda at first glance and more like a reunion of classics such as Sacred, Torchlight, and Blazing Dragons.
Keywords: Round Table (not Square Table), humor, top-down perspective, brawling, and a cartoon art style. But nope. The developers stress that Lancelot draws its inspiration from the classic The Legend of Zelda games. So expect less mindless clobbering and more adventuring, exploration, and puzzle-solving.
Unfortunately, this comically staged knightly adventure isn’t due until 2027, when it will launch on PC via Steam. The official announcement did not mention any other platforms. A little further down, you can watch the newly released announcement trailer, which shows Lancelot fighting, casting spells, and solving puzzles.
Super AC—an indie collective, by the way—also announced that Lancelot: The Silver Knight will be playable at this year’s Gamescom. More specifically, the team calls it the “world’s first public hands-on presentation.” Right. So they’re not just fobbing you off with a demo.
For reference:
I’d say it’s high time for a screenshot, so you can get a proper look at the silver knight. Here you go:
We’re still missing a few extra details about Sacred—uh, Lancelot: The Silver Knight. Naturally, you play as the first knight of the Round Table: the extremely self-assured Sir Lancelot. In his armored boots, you’ll experience a humorous reimagining of Arthurian legend. Your nemesis, Meleagant, has kidnapped Queen Guinevere, prompting you to set out on a suitably knightly rescue mission. As you cross a fantastical version of Britain in shining armor, you’ll encounter Merlin, Viviane, Morgane, plenty of mythical creatures, and a fair amount of trouble.
The action adventure regularly throws you into Zelda-style real-time combat. In other words, enemies won’t withstand your attacks for long; some even disappear after a single poke. You’ll face foes not only in the overworld, but also inside labyrinthine dungeons packed with environmental puzzles. The Enchanted Scarf plays a key role in both combat and exploration, letting you bind objects and enemies, open new paths, and solve puzzles.
Speaking of poking things: Lancelot naturally wields a sword—Arondight—and can imbue weapons with various magical powers. Artifacts found in dungeons can be combined to alter equipment functions or temporarily transform Lancelot into an ermine. Staying true to its inspiration, Lancelot: The Silver Knight also features hidden shrines and minigames such as “Chicken Toss,” where the game fully embraces its sillier side.
